The photograph

JunoCam on NASA’s Juno orbiter, 28 January 2025, on the 69th close flyby (perijove 69). Shot from about 36,000 miles above the clouds. The frame catches turbulent shear where rust belts meet blue-white zones. Citizen scientist Jackie Branc processed the raw frames. Released April 2025 as PIA26595.

The mission

NASA Juno · JunoCam

Juno went to Jupiter to learn how the solar system’s largest planet formed: how much water is in the atmosphere, whether it has a compact core, and how its magnetic field is built. Polar orbits take the spacecraft under the radiation belts, then close over the clouds. JunoCam is the public outreach camera. The cloud movies also show how deep the weather goes. This pass looked at the belt–zone boundary, where the atmosphere shears against itself.
