The photograph
Taken by the James Webb Space Telescope in near- and mid-infrared (NIRCam and MIRI). The object is planetary nebula NGC 2392, in Gemini. A hot white dwarf at the center has blown a lion-faced bubble of ionized gas; dust filaments form the mane. Hubble photographed this in visible light in 2000. Webb’s infrared view picks out compact dust clumps and a haze of ionized gas. Some of that dust is breaking up in the star’s radiation. Astronomers expect the shell to disperse in about 10,000 years.

The mission

Webb observes the infrared universe: first galaxies, star birth, and how stars die. Planetary nebulae like NGC 2392 are where a Sun-like star returns its outer layers to the galaxy. This program measured the chemistry of that ejected gas and dust, and the rings and shells that are still unexplained.
