The photograph

Artemis I, flight day 13, 28 November 2022. Shot from a camera on the tip of Orion’s solar array, looking back along the wing. Earth is a small blue disk; the Moon is a thin crescent. The spacecraft is in cislunar space, uncrewed, on a long loop beyond the Moon to prove the ship before astronauts fly it.

The mission

NASA Artemis I · Orion solar-array camera

Artemis I was the uncrewed dress rehearsal for sending people around the Moon on Orion and the Space Launch System. The cameras on the solar arrays inspected the European Service Module, watched the arrays deploy, and gave optical navigation a view of Earth and the Moon. This frame is from that camera.

The metal

Dye-infused into aluminum. A hidden float mount sits the panel ½ in off the wall.
