The photograph
This photograph was taken on 21 August 2026 at Kennedy Space Center, inside the Payload Hazardous Servicing Facility, looking up from the floor of the Falcon Heavy fairing while the Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope was being closed in. The silver foil on the stack, the dark instrument grid, and the acoustic tiles that line the curve of the fairing are all in the frame, the observatory shielded for rollout and for the climb.
Taken from Kennedy Space Center, Payload Hazardous Servicing Facility, 21 August 2026, inside the Falcon Heavy fairing. 1.5 million km beyond Earth.
The mission
Roman was built at NASA Goddard as a wide infrared survey telescope, with a 2.4-meter mirror the same size as Hubble’s and a field of view at least a hundred times larger. Each frame is meant to take in a patch of sky Hubble would need many pointings to cover.
Falcon Heavy left LC-39A at 7:26am ET on 30 August 2026. The observatory separated at 7:58am and is on its way to Sun–Earth L2 for a five-year primary mission to measure dark energy, map galaxies, and find planets around other stars. This is the hardware on the ground the day the fairing closed around it, nine days before it flew.
The metal
Dye-infused into aluminum. A hidden float mount sits the panel ½ in off the wall.
