The Moon covers the Sun’s disk; the corona streams out, with a red prominence on the limb. The path that day ran across Greenland, Iceland, and Spain.

The mission

A total eclipse is still the best ground view of the Sun’s corona, the faint outer atmosphere usually lost against the disk. NASA sends researchers and photographers onto the path to measure the corona, watch how Earth’s atmosphere and ionosphere respond when the light drops, and keep a public record of the event. Ingalls photographed totality as the Sun set over Spain.
