The photograph
Webb’s NIRCam, Picture of the Month for August 2026. A cometary globule in the Carina Nebula: a dense head of gas and dust with a swept tail, open like a chest. Inside is a young cluster of about 70 stars, around 1.3 million years old, including a rare O-type about 19 times the Sun’s mass. Many still have circumstellar disks. Radiation and winds from nearby giants, including Eta Carinae and Trumpler 16, carved that open shape after the cluster formed.

The mission
James Webb Space Telescope · NIRCam · program 5408
Carina is the nearest high-mass star-forming region. Program 5408 (PI: Reiter) asked how newborn stars gather gas from their surroundings and throw it back out as jets. Webb looked through the dust at those outflows, at disks around the young stars, and at how feedback from Eta Carinae shapes later star formation.
